Project Title
“Environmental Sustainability Management System (ESMS) Awareness” eLearning module
Developed in partnership with the Planning, Environment, and Project Development (PEPD) department’s Sustainability division at Sound Transit, this project involved developing an eLearning module to replace an outdated video training.
Goal
The aim of this module was to create awareness of the agency’s Environmental Sustainability Management System (ESMS) and maintain compliance with ISO standards in a more engaging and interactive format than the previous video training was able to provide.
Learning Objectives
- Understand Sound Transit’s history of environmental sustainability and its importance in transit development
- Recognize the environmental impacts of transit operations and the benefits of implementing sustainable practices
- Understand the principles of an ESMS and the role of employees in promoting sustainable practices in the workplace
- Identify the key elements of an effective ESMS and how they are applied in the agency’s operations
- Develop an understanding of the ESMS policies, procedures, and the role and responsibilities of the ESMS steering committee
- Understand the potential benefits of sustainable practices for the transit agency, including cost savings, improved reputation, and increased employee morale
What did I do?

- Content development for eLearning utilizing previously compiled content from SMEs

- Audio editing using Adobe Audition
- Graphic design using Adobe Photoshop
Approach
The module was developed using a variety of instructional design techniques and multimedia elements to engage learners and promote knowledge retention. It covered topics such as the history of sustainability policies and practices at Sound Transit, the components of the ESMS, how and who facilitates the ESMS, and the benefits of implementing sustainable practices.
Results
Overall, the development of this ESMS awareness eLearning module provided a valuable resource for the transit agency to promote sustainable practices and encourage employees to become champions for environmental sustainability in the workplace. Learners reported increased engagement over the previous training video, and the training was completed by 100% of agency employees to meet compliance standards.
